Milford, DE,– Milford Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) has accepted the national 2013 ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Affordable Housing from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of its efforts to provide energy-efficient housing for low-income residents. MHDC was recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 26, 2013.
“MHDC is committed to being a leader in energy-efficient, affordable housing, and believes everyone regardless of income has the right to quality housing at an affordable price. Participating in the Energy Star program is a key component to this commitment,” said David Moore, President/CEO of MHDC.
Since 2007, MHDC has been proud builder of Energy Star-certified affordable housing. MHDC continues to be a strong leader in developing energy-efficient affordable housing solutions, including both rental and homeownership opportunities. MHDC has been awarded the regional ENERGY STAR® award both in 2009 and 2010. This is the second year MHDC has been awarded the national ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence the first being in 2012, a feat unmatched by any other nonprofit affordable housing provider in Delaware.
MHDC received the ENERGY STAR® recognition for its dedication to making homeownership more affordable through ENERGY STAR® and its Self-Help Housing program. Key accomplishments from the past year include:
- Developing 26 homeownership units for low income households through its Self-Help Housing Program, all of which are ENERGY STAR® certified.
- Lowering monthly utility costs of homeowners by approximately $50 to $70 compared to the estimated costs in comparable noncertified homes.
- Promoting its ENERGY STAR® partnership on its website and placing Energy Star plaques on each home so homeowners can proudly acknowledge their certified homes.
